Julian Smith

CHAIR

Julian Smith is an architect and planner, who has worked on culturally-significant sites both in Canada and abroad. His projects have involved the rehabilitation and restoration of historic buildings, landscapes, and neighbourhoods, including the Vimy Monument in France, the Aberdeen Pavilion in Ottawa, the Lister Block in Hamilton, and the Canadian Embassy in Paris. He has developed master plans for the Governor-General’s estate, the Central Experimental Farm, and the Parliament Buildings and Grounds in Toronto, as well as heritage district designations and management plans for the Byward Market area in Ottawa, the Village of Rockcliffe Park, and the National Register District of Peacham, Vermont.

Julian set up and directed the M.A. program in Heritage Conservation at Carleton University, and later helped develop the Diploma Program at Willowbank, establishing its reputation nationally and internationally. He has worked on sites in the U.S., France, India, China, and Kazakhstan. He was co-author of UNESCO’s 2011 Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape, a reflection of his life-long interest in cultural landscape theory and practice. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 2016.
