Drystone Walling Introduction

This two-day hands-on course is open to masons, landscapers and enthusiasts of all abilities and includes 15 hours of instruction and a Willowbank certificate upon completion. We will cover safety, basic terminology, structure and styles of dry stone walling. Students will be able to identify proper walling techniques and construct their own walls with an understanding of structure.

The two-day format allows time for students to ask questions regarding their own projects.

This is a rain or shine event, and students are required to bring their own walling tools, safety shoes, eyewear protection and appropriate clothing. Instructors are certified with the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain.

Dean McLellan

Dry Stone Waller

Dean McLellan is certified Master Craftsman in Canada recognized by the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain. He is also a  professional member of the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain and a certified instructor.  Dean is a faculty associate at Willowbank as well as an instructor at the Niagara School of Horticulture.


Philip Dolphin

Dry Stone Waller

Philip Dolphin is a certified Master Craftsman from North Yorkshire in the UK, recognized by the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain. He is a professional member of the the Dry Stone Walling Association of Great Britain and a certified instructor.


Kenneth Davies

Dry Stone Waller

Bachelor of Arts (anthropology) from Trent University, 2007. Diploma in Heritage and Traditional Masonry from Algonquin College, 2009. Discouraged by the state of the masonry industry in Southwestern Ontario (predominantly man made veneer work) he transitioned over a number of years to drystone walling. Currently, he holds a Level 2 professional certification and instructor certification from the DSWA UK.


Stone Carving

This 1-day course is open to masons and enthusiasts of all abilities.

Try your hand at stone carving! This one-day hands-on course will cover safety and basic techniques of stone carving. Students will spend the day working on their own piece that they will be able to take home with them. Course includes tools, stone and lunch.

This is a rain or shine event, and students are recommended to bring their own safety shoes, protective eyewear and appropriate clothing.

Cost: $200, includes lunch

Co-founder of Smith and Barber Sculpture Atelier [link: http://smithandbarber.com] and Willowbank faculty associate, Danny has worked on the Parliament Buildings and Rideau Hall in Ottawa, the Legislative Assemebly in Sasketchawan and the Brock Monument right here in Queenston!


 

Advanced Stone Carving- ON HOLD

This 2-day course offers advanced instruction and collaboration in the subtleties of materials and tools and their relationship to historical styles and techniques. Carvers will be expected to bring small, partially completed projects of their own, or have some idea of a project to carve. This is a rain or shine event, and students are recommended to bring their own safety shoes, protective eyewear and appropriate clothing. Cost: $300, includes lunch.

Master Carver

Nicholas Fairplay is a European trained artisan and master carver with expertise in design, drawing and fabrication of museum quality sculpture in classical styles. An architectural sculptor with over 40 years experience of unparalleled design, technique and execution. Mr. Fairplay specializes in hand carved stone and marble sculpture and ornament. Past projects include, among others, key elements at Westminster Abbey, London; Windsor Castle, Windsor, U.K.; St. Paul's Cathedral, London; Houses of Parliament, London; Hampton Court, London; St. John the Divine, New York City; the Utah State Capitol, Salt Lake City; Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh.
